What is FIRE?
FIRE = Financial Independence, Retire Early
The FIRE movement originated in the US. Its core concept is achieving financial freedom through aggressive saving and investing, allowing you to retire early without needing to work for money. When your investment returns can fully cover your living expenses, you have achieved financial independence.
Four Types of FIRE
- Standard FIRE: Maintain your current lifestyle in retirement. The target amount is typically 25 times your annual expenses (based on the 4% rule).
- Lean FIRE: A minimalist retirement with reduced living expenses. The target is usually about 70% of Standard FIRE.
- Fat FIRE: A retirement with a higher standard of living and abundance. The target is around 150% of Standard FIRE.
- Coast FIRE: Save enough money early on, then stop contributing and let compound interest grow your portfolio until traditional retirement age.
What is the 4% Rule?
Based on the Trinity Study, if you withdraw 4% of your investment portfolio annually for living expenses, there is a 95% chance your assets will last for at least 30 years without running out.
Formula: FIRE Target Amount = Annual Expenses ÷ 4% = Annual Expenses × 25
