Why won't my AVIF images open?
AVIF is a modern image format built on the AV1 video codec. At similar quality it is often 30–50% smaller than JPG, which is why Google, Netflix and many websites use it. But many older programs (older Photoshop, Word, some desktop chat apps, photo galleries and CMS back-ends) still cannot open or upload AVIF. Converting to JPG or PNG is the simplest fix.
How to use

About quality and file size
AVIF compresses very efficiently, so the converted JPG or PNG is usually larger. That does not mean better quality. If you only need to display the image on a web page, keep the AVIF; convert only when an app or platform does not accept it.
