What is "Nominal Age" (East Asian Age Reckoning)?

"Actual age" is the international standard: you turn 0 at birth, and gain a year on each birthday. Nominal age, used traditionally across East Asia, works differently: you're already 1 year old at birth, and everyone gains a year together on Chinese New Year — not on their personal birthday. This is why nominal age can be one or even two years ahead of your actual age, depending on when in the year you were born.

This calculator uses a built-in table of real Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year) dates from 1930 to 2050 to check whether this year's Chinese New Year has already passed, instead of relying on the oversimplified "year difference + 1" shortcut many other calculators use.

The Chinese Zodiac Also Follows the Lunar Year, Not January 1st

The 12 Chinese zodiac animals (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig) change on Chinese New Year, not on the Gregorian new year. If you were born in late January or February, your zodiac animal might differ from what a simple "birth year" chart shows — this tool checks the real date for you.

How Are Star Signs Determined?

Your Western star sign is based on fixed zodiac date ranges and depends only on your birth month and day — it has nothing to do with the lunar calendar or birth year, so there's no ambiguity once you enter the correct date.

Q1: I only entered my birth year — is the result accurate?

Your actual age and nominal age will show rough estimates (since we don't know if your birthday has passed), your zodiac animal is estimated from the Gregorian year, and your star sign cannot be determined at all (it depends only on month and day). Enter the full date for the most accurate results.

Q2: Why is my nominal age two years ahead of my actual age?

If you were born shortly before Chinese New Year (say, late December or early January, before that year's Chinese New Year), you already start at nominal age 1, and then gain another year once that year's Chinese New Year passes — combined with having already passed your actual birthday, this can put your nominal age two years ahead. This is a normal quirk of East Asian age reckoning.
